TATTOO AFTERCARE
Remember, it is your responsibility to take care of your tattoo once you leave the establishment.
If you have any questions about your tattoo or the healing process, please call. Our contact information is available on our website. Since we guarantee a 90 day touch up policy, we ask that you follow this advice on the care of your new tattoo and not anyone else’s. A tattoo will normally take about 7-14 days to fully heal.
Use clean bed linens. DO NOT let any pets or animals touch or lick your new tattoo. Wash hands after touching your pets before touching your new tattoo.
Before doing anything with your tattoo, make sure to wash your hands with soap, thoroughly lathering you hands for at least 30 seconds before rinsing.
Remove bandage after 2-4 hours. Tattoos will ooze, this is a normal part of the healing process. All wounds need to breathe if they are to heal properly.
Wash the tattoo using a mild antibacterial soap and warm water (USING ONLY YOUR HANDS). Take care to remove all traces of blood and plasma as this will cause scabbing. DO NOT scrub the tattoo with a washcloth during the two week healing period. Pat it dry and clean using a soft cloth and leave it alone for 10-20 minutes. Let it dry completely.
Once dry, apply a very thin coat of Aquaphor on the tattoo. Only use enough to make it shine, a little goes a long way. Too much ointment traps germs into your new tattoo which can potentially lead to infection. There should be enough to keep the tattoo moist and to keep it from scabbing. Do not re-bandage the tattoo.
Repeat the cycle of washing, drying, and applying ointment to the tattoo 3-4 times per day for the first 3 days, then switch to a regular unscented moisturizer (lotion/petroleum jelly). Apply the lotion twice a day for the remainder of the two weeks. DO NOT use a lotion that contains color or fragrance at all the healing is complete.
You must keep your tattoo moisturized. When the tattoo is kept moist it doesn’t have to change from a scab but does form a thin membrane to protect the tattoo while it heals. DO NOT PEEL your tattoo, you WILL PULL THE INK OUT.
You must keep your tattoo clean. Take warm showers. Hot water (steam) opens the skin’s pores and can cause greater loss of pigment during the healing process. DO NOT soak your tattoo, this includes swimming, hot tubs, steam rooms, or even prolonged showers. Prolonged soaking can and will soak through the soft tissue turning it into a soggy mess and cause your new ink to flow down the drain.
Excessive sweating during the first week can push fresh pigment out as well.
Refrain from scratching, picking or rubbing the tattoo.
Scrubbing with a washcloth can be very harsh on a tattoo and will cause your colors to fade. Disrupting the tattoo while it’s healing can also cause scar tissue. It is normal for the tattoo to become very itchy during the healing time. Just remember not to pick or scratch NO MATTER WHAT.
If you experience symptoms such as an allergic reaction, excessive swelling, redness, yellow or green discharge, or fever, consult a physician.
WITHOUT A DOUBT THE SINGLE WORST THING FOR A TATTOO IS THE SUN. The sun is probably the worst enemy and destroyer of tattoos. During the initial healing process, you absolutely need to keep your new tattoo out of the sun, as it will damage the skin further and can cause all sorts of problems from scarring your tattoo to lightening up. Even after your tattoo has healed the sun can cause damage to the tattoo making it fade and reducing the quality. Be sure to use a high grade sunscreen on your tattoo every time you expose it to the sun.
